3 Steps to Building a Profitable Email List

One of the biggest mistakes I see business owners make is trying to sell directly through social media.

It doesn’t work because social media isn’t a “buying environment.”

There are two reasons this is true:

1. Social media scrollers are receiving & relaxing. Not buying.

They scroll through their Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok newsfeeds to get free entertainment, advice, solutions, content, etc.

Besides that, they’re typically relaxing on the couch, half-watching TV - Or, scrolling to avoid whatever social situation they’re in.

When someone is in a state of receiving and relaxing, it gets way harder to get them to buy information, services, products, etc.

2. It takes too many steps to buy from an organic social media post.

Consider all the steps it takes for someone to buy something they saw while scrolling through social media…

They have to click on your profile, click the link in your bio, wait for the page to load, dust the crumbs off their shirt, get off the couch, find their wallet, and put their card info in.

You may be thinking, “That’s not very hard,” but for the lazy, potato-chip-eating social media scroller - it’s the most difficult job in the world.

I’ve worked on hundreds (thousands?) of online marketing campaigns, and one thing is always true: If you want to build a clientele, or successfully launch your event or product - you need an email list.

Here’s a guide to starting yours...

Build A Profitable Email List in 3 Easy Steps...

1. Make a free offer (AKA: Freebie)

Make a freebie you can give away in exchange for email addresses.

It doesn't have to be elaborate. Your free offer could be a video, PDF, checklist, or article.

Chances are, you have hundreds of recorded classes, seminars, and workshops lying around. Choose one to offer your followers for free in exchange for their email addresses.

Your freebie should be easy to consume and use. Avoid things like long E-books, classes over 20 minutes long, and information-based courses.

Freebie Examples for Personal Trainers & Yoga Teachers:

  • A 3-Step Guide to [a proper warm-up, gaining muscle, losing weight, getting flexible, doing a headstand, etc.]

  • A daily, weekly, or monthly checklist for [tracking your yoga practice, tracking macros, tracking habits, etc.]

  • A quick, 10-15 minute video for a specific solution [yoga for better sleep, a quick workout for when you’re feeling lazy, a prenatal yoga video, yoga for tight hips, etc.]

  • A gym warm-up video

  • A [number] day yoga or fitness challenge

  • A guided meditation for [anxiety, mornings, stress, gratitude, insomnia, etc.]

  • A 3-minute neck tension release video

  • A macro masterclass

2. Make a freebie sign-up page.

Make a simple page where people can sign up to get your freebie.

You can build this on your website, or, to make it easy - Use Mailchimp landing pages.

The page doesn’t need to be extravagant. In fact, sometimes pages that look “homemade” perform better.

** I recommend keeping it simple to start - you can always make it better later.

3. Use social media to promote your free offer.

Put a link to your sign-up page in your bio and promote your free offer to start building your email list.

I hope this guide helps you out. Feel free to bookmark it and come back to it when you're ready to build your list.
